Smartphones are now more common than “dumb” phones.

For the first time, more than half of all American mobile customers own a smartphone, according to a report released Wednesday by Nielsen. That’s up from 38% a year ago.

As smartphones eclipse “feature” phones — the industry’s term for phones without touchscreens — the way Americans are using their handsets is changing. The number of apps downloaded to Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) iPhone and Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) Android devices grew 28% over the past year to an average of 41 apps per phone.

Smartphone users are spending 39 minutes per day using their apps, up 10% from a year ago. In defiance of its rather twee title, the documentary “Dolphin Boy” is admirably opposed to mystical pronouncements about the man-beast connection it so carefully records. The low number of students that have been released to live off campus for the upcoming school year has led to an uproar among some students who wish to change the university’s housing policy.

Of the 218 students who applied to live off campus, 99 were released. Some were surprised to find that 32 of those not released were rising seniors.

Last year, every student who applied was released, including rising sophomores through seniors.

According to Erica Stephenson, the associate director of Residence Life and Civic Engagement, the reason for this significant drop is the additional on-campus housing added by the university.

“The 18th Street Commons has added a significant number of beds,” she said.

Junior Liam Michener, one of the 32 rising seniors not to be released, started an online petition against the school’s housing policy.

The Utah heating company came to our home looked at our heater and quoted me a price on replacing it. His price was fair and well worth it to us for the warmth and comfort. I figured it would take him at least a week to get to the replacement job, and we were prepared to stay in a hotel until the job was completed. A bankruptcy judge in Florida recently sent a message to big banks: When your debtors go into bankruptcy, quit trying to get money out of them or you’ll be the one who ends up paying.

The case concerns a debtor who went into bankruptcy, then filed what’s known as a debtor’s discharge. That’s a legal injunction meant to protect a debtor from collection actions, such as letters and phone calls demanding payment, on the part of the creditor. The point of a debtor’s discharge is to offer a grace period while the debtor gets their finances in order.

Sometimes, though, banks ignore the discharge. That’s what Bank of America did in the recent Florida case. After the debtor filed for bankruptcy protection, BofA proceeded to call the debtor an additional 38 times to ask about the outstanding payments, according to the Bankruptcy Law Network.

In the end, though, it was BofA that had to shell out. Water safety isn’t just a summer, warm-weather topic for Mesa Fire Capt. Paul Liddell. It’s a year-round lesson that has to be taught over and over again.

A vast majority of child drownings in Maricopa County happen in pools. But during his 16-year career with the Mesa Fire Department, Liddell said he’s also been on calls involving bathtubs and the Valley’s canal system.

Just once, Liddell said, he’d like to have a year go by without a water-related incident.

“It takes a toll on you. It would be great to go a summer without being involved in one. They’re probably one of the worst calls I’m ever going to go on,” Liddell said.
